Part One / Part Two
…Or are they?
Chanyeol would always look at you in the corridors, class or even in the cafeteria, staring with those big eyes empty of emotion. You could never tell whether his stare was a glare or a look of longing. It was just… blank. As if he didn’t feel anything inside anymore.
Had you broken him? He was so happy and bubbly and excitable, and now… Does he even have emotions anymore? Does he feel anymore?
Does he hate you? Oh god, what if he hates you. He hates you, doesn’t he? You couldn’t handle him hating you. He was still Chanyeol. He still made you happy for that year, even if it didn’t end well; those days were still something you looked back on fondly.
“Do you think Chanyeol hates me now?” You mumbled. “He has the right to, right?”
“No, I don’t think he hates you, and no, he doesn’t have the right to hate you.” He sighed. “Now, I love you, but please, it’s 2AM.”
“You look tired; are you okay?” You asked the boy beside you, reaching up to rub your thumb against the dark skin under his eyes. He promptly swatted your hand away and nudged you with his shoulder.
“Well maybe you should stop phoning me at 2AM and then maybe I’d get some sleep.”
“I’m sorry, Baekkie. I know I’ll forget so you should probably put your phone on silent every night.” You leant against his shoulder as he laughed.
“But then I know you’d just come over to my dorm and wake me up in person.” You pouted and blinked at him with big eyes and he sighed. “Yes, yes, I know, you’re sorry.”
“I don’t mean to be such a pain. I just do it without thinking.”
“Don’t worry about it, silly.” He grinned, “You’re not a pain.”
“Positive.” He reassured, ruffling your hair and running his finger down your nose as he’d taken habit to (especially seen as he knew it annoyed you).
“I swear to all that is holy, Junmyeon; I am going to grab the kid by his neck and I am going to strangle him.” Chanyeol muttered fiercely, his fists so tight on the table that his knuckles turned white.
“Chanyeol, he’s older than you and I think you’re overreacting.” Junmyeon replied calmly. “They’re not even together.”
“How do you know?” He hissed.
“Baekhyun’s my friend.” Junmyeon shrugged, “and I asked him if him and her were dating and he said he was just looking out for her. Apparently, she’s very dependent on others.”
“She’s not supposed to depend on others; she’s supposed to depend on me.”
“Well, you’re not exactly reliable, are you, Chanyeol? When was that Maths homework due in?”
“That’s not that point!” Chanyeol exclaimed, frustrated, running his fingers through his hair. “She’s mine, Junmyeon. Mine. Not Baekhyun’s; mine.”
“She’s a human being. You can’t own a person.” Chanyeol raised an eyebrow. “Just because you usually get everything you want doesn’t mean you will now too.”
Chanyeol ignored him and went back to watching you. Baekhyun ruffled your hair and ran his finger down your nose. What the heck was that? He shouldn’t even be touching her, he thought, fuming. He slammed his hands down onto the table and stormed out.
“What a surprise. You’re phoning me and it’s not 2AM.” He teased cheekily. “You’re two hours early.”
“I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“What do you mean? You’re bored?” He asked.
You scoffed. “I’m stupid. For leaving Chanyeol. Aren’t I?”
“Not at all. He cheated on you; he deserves to lose the most beautiful girl in the world.” He smiled, snuggling his head into his pillow.
“You’re just saying that because you want me to stop phoning you while you’re trying to sleep.”
“Don’t be silly. Are you in your dorm?”
“No.” You mumbled, embarrassed.
“Where are you?”
“Outside your door.” Baekhyun rushed out of bed, leaving his phone behind, unlocked and threw open the door to find you curled up in a ball against the wall beside it. He crouched down beside you and stroked your hair.
“What are you doing out here?” He laughed softly, picking you up – you’re still not sure how; Baekhyun wasn’t exactly known for his muscles – and carrying you inside, sitting you down on his bed and turning off his phone. It’s not like he needed it now you were here with him (you were the only person who phoned him after all).
“I don’t know what to do anymore, Baekhyun.” You sobbed, pulling your knees back in to your chest. “I need him. I rely on him for everything. I honestly have no idea what to do anymore. I’m constantly just sitting in bed wondering what I should be doing with my life and I draw a blank every time. I really really loved him.”
“Loved.” Baekhyun picked out, smiling widely. “You loved him, but he’s an ass and this is just the first stage of moving on. It’s hard, but you just have to work at it and eventually, you’ll get the results. It’s like studying for a test.”
“How do you know all this?”
“Ahh, I once liked a girl and she had a boyfriend already, so I had to learn to get over her. It was hard and I’m still kinda working on it, but I’ll get the results I want eventually.”
“And what results do you want?”
“For her to be happy.” You curled into his side and let him pull the covers over the both of you, wrapping an arm around you and running his fingers through your hair for comfort. “I’m guessing that you want to stay here tonight?”
“Of course you can. You don’t even need to ask. Just tell me when you’re outside my dorm next time, okay?” He laughed, lying down beside you and getting comfortable.
Soon, his breathing slowed and only when you were certain he was asleep, you snuggled into his chest and sighed, listening to his heartbeat.
You used to cuddle with Chanyeol, but who knew where his hands had been? Baekhyun wasn’t Chanyeol, and you knew that, but the comfort of even just having someone there to hold you while you slept was enough to lull you to a peaceful night’s sleep.
“Hey, Junmyeon; what’s up?”
“Uh… There’s something I need to tell you.” The older boy dragged him to a darkened end of the corridor, where other students can’t hear him and he leant against the wall and sighed.
“What is it?”
“It’s about Chanyeol. He’s super annoyed about you and _____ and… I think he’s going to do something stupid.”
Baekhyun groaned, “of course he’s going to do something stupid; he’s Chanyeol. He doesn’t think before he acts. Clearly, or he wouldn’t have cheated on _____.”
“Wait, he did what?” Junmyeon mumbled, eyes going wide.
“You heard right. _____ walked in on him and Mina about to get it on. Why do you think I’m being so protective?” Junmyeon opened his mouth to talk but Baekhyun raised an eyebrow and continued. “Okay, more protective than usual.”
“He never said.”
“It’s not something you brag about, really.” Baekhyun started to walk away, wandering towards the cafeteria. “We should probably get to him and _____ before he does that something stupid you were talking about.”
When Baekhyun stepped into the cafeteria, Chanyeol was down on one knee beside your table, students silent as the ‘proposal’ continued.
“_____, I love you with all my heart and I don’t know what horrible thing I did to deserve this, but please, at least talk to me.”
“I have nothing to say to you, Chanyeol. We’re not dating anymore. Can you please leave me alone? All the stares are making me uncomfortable.” Chanyeol glared around the room but when his eyes turned back to you they were full of that sadness that made you feel all fuzzy and vulnerable inside.
“Please, _____. Give me a second chance? I’ll make it right, I promise.”
“You can’t ‘make it right’, Chanyeol.”
“I can and I will.”
“Nothing you could possibly do is going to even cover the fact that you slept with my best friend!” You screamed, losing your temper. You slammed your hand over your mouth and shook with fear. Eyes around you were wide (especially Chanyeol’s) and whispers were erupting and Baekhyun was coming flying at you and you didn’t know what to do.
What had you just done?
Had you just ruined him in front of everyone?
“_____, I didn’t mean it. We were drunk and-”
“You know that’s a terrible excuse, Chanyeol.” Baekhyun muttered, lifting you to your feet and clasping your hand in his. “Face it, you’re a player and you don’t know how to treat girls properly.”
“I know. I know what I am; please don’t say it out loud.” He mumbled and the honesty caught you off guard. “I know what I am, _____ and I’m not asking you to forgive me but I want you to know that I really did genuinely love you and I always will. I’d have you back in a heartbeat if you ever wanted me and I wouldn’t mess it up after the first mistake. We make mistakes and we learn from them, right?”
“You’ve learnt your lesson?” You asked sincerely. Chanyeol’s eyes flashed with hope and Baekhyun’s with horror.
“Then whoever dates you next is going to be a very lucky girl, Park Chanyeol, and you treat her right this time, okay?” He nodded and pulled you in for a hug.
“Yes?” He mumbled tiredly over the phone. “You’re back to phoning me at 2AM, I see. Do you ever sleep?”
“I love you.” You confessed, head hanging.
So it’d been a month since the cafeteria incident and Chanyeol had a new girlfriend (who honestly, was the sweetest thing) and fully supported him and he came to you for advice often. You could see it in his eyes that he didn’t want to screw this one up. Desperately.
Mina somehow fell to the bottom of the social ladder and you were grateful and kind of guilty at the same time, but that didn’t last long. She deserved the place really; it was rightfully her’s.
Baekhyun… Well, he was still Baekhyun. He always would be. Calm, sweet, gentle, oh, and the guy you suddenly found yourself falling in love with.
He wasn’t Chanyeol; he was better (but from past experiences, you were biased).
He was Baekhyun, and that was all he needed to be.
“I love you too.” He mumbled from his dorm door way, ruffling your hair as you sat beside his door. “C’mon.”
You took his hand and slept beside him that night. Baekhyun was Baekhyun and Baekhyun was yours.
And you were grateful.
Sometimes, someone has to see you at your worst, to deserve at your best, and Baekhyun was the perfect match for your annoying 2AM phone calls and silly cuddling habits.
